Entry #2 Views on Religion

What is religion? Many people might not know what religion is and many might have their own opinion on it. The proper definition religion is the belief in a worship of a superhuman power. In my anthropology class we are trying to figure out what religion means to us because everyone has their own view on religion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSgUo-AbVxg&themeRefresh=1 In the first three minutes of this video Michael spends some time with a group of people and he participates in dances that are ritual like but at the end he asks them why they dance. They answered and said because of Hamamasim which means to make happy. It then makes you think most religions don’t just focus on belief. Most anthropologists think religion in not just what you think or what you believe. Wade Davis another anthropologist goes on a journey with Elder Brothers, and a group of Sierra Nevada Indians whose spiritual practice holds the world in balance. https://www.ted.com/talks/wade_davis_the_worldwide_web_of_belief_and_ritual?language=en Wade observes that both groups say they try to become god but us regular people go to church to talk about god. Most people might look at the mountain as being a good place to mind but a young kid from the andes who is raised to believe that the mountain is an Apu spirit that will direct his or her destiny. At the end everyone has their own opinion on religion and it can be looked at so many different ways or celebrated.

  1. Hello,
I really like how you chose to talk about this topic! It is not common and people don't talk about it much. I think you have a great view on religion and i agree with you, religion can be looked at in so many different ways and that's the best part about it.

  2. Hi Hannah
While, writing this blog about religion. What is one thing that popped out to you and interested you? Did you find anything strange or odd about your religion or other religions near you? And also, while looking into the cultures, did you see how the culture of the religion affects the country of place it is in?
