Entry #7 Fresh Food

After watching the documentary called Fresh released in 2009 it has changed my mind on what I put in my body. In the documentary a couple of farmers are interviewed about how they grow crops and feed their livestock. The documentary goes a lot into depth about how each farm is different and how each farmer sees the industry. Some farmers will talk about how they give their chickens the cheapest food and they don’t even know what their chickens are eating then the chickens will be given to people to eat. Other farmers keep their chickens in a free range not a lot in one small room and they can list the things that are being fed to the chickens. Obviously, with that being said when people buy these chickens the price will be highly different from one another. This document was an eye-opener because it explained so much about what goes beyond just a hen laying eggs and planting a couple of crops. I now think twice before picking up fast food and now make it at home. Even though I make my food at home I still think about how well the animal that I am about to eat is good or if the farmer even took care of the chicken. It really makes me wonder and scared because I am also giving that to my child. I hope that in the future farms around the world start to think about how they raise their livestock and what they are spraying their plants to protect from pesticides. I think this would be better for everyone and most importantly for the kids because if out food is being grown bad how will that affect our bodies.

Entry #6 Halloween

Why does everyone dress up on October 31st. It all started as the day that marked the end of summertime and the beginning of a cold winter. This celebration started by the Celtic's as a festival to celebrate the spirits who would come back to visit earth. The Celtic's participated in a ritual that the locals would create big bonfire and disguise themselves as something scary to avoid harm from spirits that were evil. They would also leave out food for spirits so that the evil spirits wouldn’t harm people. By the 19th century Christianity made its way to the Celtic's which introduced the holiday called All Souls Day. Poor people were known to go around to other people's house to pray for the family member that had passed away in exchange for soul cake. That is how it came to be known as what kids do each year on October 31st trick-or-treating. Then throughout the year's most people would dress up as their favorite singer or funny thing they could find at the Spirit Halloween store. The famous Jack O'Lantern that story always gives me the chills. I provided the link if you would like to read the meaning behind Jack. The reason Jack O'Lantern's have such a big significance on Halloween is because it was another form of scaring the evil spirits away. They would carve scary figures into pumpkins or large beets. I find it so interesting how the celebration of Halloween started and how Americans now celebrate it. Many things that are done on Halloween are to protect people from evil spirits returning to earth. Did you know that you were scaring away evil spirits?
